5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Pool Contractor

Building a pool is one of the biggest investments you'll make in your backyard — and knowing the right pool contractor questions to ask can mean the difference between a smooth project and costly mistake. Before you sign a contract, here are five questions every homeowner should ask.

1. Is your team licensed, insured, and experienced with custom builds?

Not all "pool contractors" are equal. Some only install pre-fab kits, while others design and build fully custom pools from the ground up. Ask to see proof of licensing and insurance, and ask how many custom (not just standard) pools they've completed.

2. Will one team handle the whole project, or will I be coordinating multiple contractors?

This is one of the biggest hidden costs of a backyard renovation. If your pool contractor doesn't also handle grading, drainage, hardscaping, and electrical, you may end up hiring — and managing — three or four separate companies yourself. A design-build company handles it all under one roof, which saves you time, reduces miscommunication, and keeps the project on schedule.

3. What's the realistic timeline, including permitting?

Ask for a full timeline, not just "how long does construction take." Permitting, inspections, and weather delays are often left out of contractor estimates — and they can add weeks or months to your project. A contractor who's upfront about the full timeline is one you can trust.

4. What's included in the quote — and what isn't?

Get this in writing. Some quotes include only the pool shell, while others include decking, landscaping, fencing, and equipment. Ask specifically what's excluded so there are no surprise costs later.

5. Can I see examples of past work — ideally nearby?

Photos are good, but references or nearby completed projects are better. Ask if you can see a finished pool in person, or talk to a past client about their experience.
